Responsible Care Activities
Ube Industries has been carrying out its operations guided by the ethos of Responsible Care (RC).
Responsible Care
Responsible Care is a set of voluntary initiatives based on the principles of autonomous decision-making and self-responsibility. Under RC, corporations that manufacture and/or handle chemical substances working voluntarily to preserve health, safety and the environment in every process, from the development of chemicals through their manufacture, distribution, use, and final consumption, and disposal. This includes maintaining ongoing dialogues and discussions with the public by openly disclosing the results of these efforts.
In pursuing its vision of RC, UBE Industries has been developing and promoting RC activities in all its business segments.
RC incorporates the following activities:
- Environmental Preservation: Protecting nature and the health of people around the world.
- Process Safety & Disaster Prevention: Preventing industrial accidents and limiting their impact in the event a mishap does occur.
- Occupational Safety & Health: Ensuring the health and safety of all employees.
- Product Stewardship: Providing information on the characteristics and handling of products in order to protect the environment and ensure the safety and health of customers and all other users.
- Communication with the Community: Carrying out operations with the full understanding of local communities.

Environment-oriented management is one of the central goals of New 21: UBE, the UBE Group's management plan. This strong commitment to RC activities is further evident in the range of RC-based measures we are currently implementing:
- Strict compliance with requirements laid out in environmental conservation regulations is an absolute minimum for our RC activities. Over and above this, we are working to: further improve areas of our operations that have an impact on air and water polution; reduce emissions and release of chemicals; and reduce and effectively reuse industrial waste. As part of our global environmental measures, we are aiming to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 by 6% by 2010 (Base year=1990).
- Our employees exercise constant care to prevent accidents and ensure workplace safety. We are also looking to make further improvements to our safety systems and introduce risk assessments and other measures.
- In the area of product stewardship, we issue Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and emergency response cards ("yellow cards") to customers and the companies that transport our products. Additionally, we conduct safety tests on new chemicals, regularly test existing chemicals and participate in international chemical safety projects.
- In order to help the community better understand our RC activities, we publish a Responsible Care Report titled "Working for the Environment, Safety and Health."
