1. Environment-oriented Distributed Energy System

In the 21st century, society will see continuous change in the way we live based on a number of key concepts: diversification, dispersion, on-demand and miniaturization. There will also be rising global concern about how to best preserve the environment. In response to these trends, we see the development of distributed energy system that tackle environmental issues as an essential matter. Our main objectives in this area are the development of gas diffusion electrode that uses a porous carbon membrane, and a heat-resistant proton conductive solid polymer electrolyte membrane. In conjunction with this work, we are developing a catalyst to reform gasoline and methanol to produce hydrogen.

UBE is advancing research with emphasis on the following; We are developing metal complex dyes for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells. These Dyes have many characteristics. 1) have high durativity to heat, light and many chemicals. 2) have high molar extinction coefficients.

2. Photocatalytic Fibers

Using technologies created in the development of Tyranno fiber, we have successfully developed a Photocatalytic Fiber with a large surface area and good fiber strength. We developed this product by focusing on titania's photocatalytic property oxidizing and decomposing organic substances. We are conducting market development activities through differentiation with the unique characteristics of this material. One expected use of this new fiber is resolution of pollutants such as dioxins.
