UBE Power Center Co. (President: Shun'ichi Kira), which Ube Industries,Ltd. (President: Kazumasa Tsunemi) founded to act as an independent power producer for the wholesale supply of electricity to Chugoku Electric Power Co., has completed the construction of the UBE Power Center Electric Power Plant, which began operations March 1, 2004.
Ube Industries won the contract with Chugoku Electric through an open bidding process in fiscal 1997.
The contract was later transferred to UBE Power Center, which was founded in February 1998. In October 2001, UBE Power Center began building the power plant on the premises of a chemicals plant owned by Ube Industries. Test operation began in October 2003.
The coal-fired thermoelectric power plant has an output of 216,000 kilowatts. Coal is supplied by Ube Industries' own coal mine at Okinoyama. Ash, desulfurized gypsum and other waste is taken away for reuse as raw material at Ube Industries' cement plant.
The plant has contracted to supply Chugoku Electric with 195,000 kilowatts of power, or a total of about 1.2 billion kWh of electricity annually, for a period of 15 years.
