Career Education Seminar at Kogai Elementary School in Minato Ward

The UBE Group was involved in a career education seminar at Kogai Elementary School in Minato Ward, Tokyo. The purpose of the seminar is to help elementary school students discover the importance of work and having a dream. Staff from the Frontier Technology Research Laboratory of Ube Industries taught students how to use clear polyethylene and a polarizing plate to split light into different colors, and make their own kaleidoscopes.

Purpose of Initiative (Objective)
  • Communicate the fun of chemistry to children who will shoulder the chemical industry in the future
  • Communicate the social significance of materials manufacturers to children and their guardians who normally have few opportunities to engage with the materials industry

Number of beneficiaries: 23 elementary school students, 8 guardians

Comments from participating children and guardians: “It was fun making kaleidoscopes from polyethylene,” “I learned that polyethylene can split light into different colors,” “I thought it would be hard for the children to learn about the properties of polyethylene, but the employees were very supportive and the children were satisfied.”
